In addition to its grammatical pomposity, John E. Swanson’s letter (May 28) on Gustav Mahler’s music was a sad and revealing document: a confession of one stricken with impaired perception and the desire to zealously accuse imaginary tormentors.

Needless to say, Swanson and I march to different drummers. I’ll take Mahler’s off-stage snare any day.
