Reagan’s Stance on Salt II

Share

Reading the paper the other morning I felt my childrens’ future had been terminated. Moving away from SALT II is one more step toward the destruction of this planet, and the voice I hear in this country today is in total ignorance of what it means to live in the Nuclear Age. Do we all want to be taken care of so desperately that we will allow our leaders to take any step in the name of security?

Secretary Shultz says that the treaty is “obsolete” and that “what we’re trying to do is to regain a modern, effective deterrent to war.” In reality, war is obsolete and the only deterrent today is understanding that and beginning to build our security by pressing hard for successful negotiation. That shift in attitude would be only the first step in the process of attaining true security.

Do we all hate and fear so much that it aligns with our own motivations to accept 50,000 nuclear weapons and say it’s not enough? Where is the voice of public indignation?
