Countywide : First Woman Promoted to Sheriff Homicide Unit
Debra Murray, the first woman to work for a bomb squad in the county, has now become the first woman homicide investigator for the county Sheriff’s Department.
Murray, who began her police career in 1976 as a Wayne County, Mich., deputy sheriff, joined the county Sheriff’s Department in 1980. She joined the bomb squad in January, 1982, while still retaining her normal duties as deputy, Lt. Richard Olson said.
In May, she received an Award of Personal Achievement form the statewide Women’s Peace Officers Assn.
She was promoted to the rank of investigator in December, 1985, and has most recently worked for the North Orange County Investigation Unit.
