A savings and loan branch actually came out $89 ahead when it was robbed Monday.

According to police reports, a man armed with a .25-caliber pistol took $3,858 from two tellers at the Coast Savings office at 3800 Fifth Ave., about 9 a.m.

The robber dropped his gun and the bag containing the money on a nearby sidewalk after a dye bomb planted in the bag by one of the tellers exploded. The dye, which is often placed by tellers in the stash of money surrendered to would-be robbers, is used to identify suspects and stolen goods.

Police recovered $3,947--$89 more than the robber took. According to a Coast spokesman, the $89 will be put into a general account and will be returned if the robber is caught.

“We’d give it back to him,” the spokesman said. “We are not entitled to make money on bank robberies. We have never had that happen before.”
