Culver City Council OKs Fireworks Sale Permits, Funds for Display

The Culver City council this week approved permits for 10 nonprofit groups to sell so-called “safe and sane” fireworks for the Fourth of July holiday and has authorized up to $8,500 in city funds for a local service group to stage the city’s annual fireworks display.

The 10 local veterans’ and civic organizations applied in April for the right to sell state-approved fireworks in Culver City from June 29 to July 4. Their application fees, permit fees and liability insurance premiums were paid to the city by Red Devil Fireworks Co., a subsidiary of Anaheim-based Pyrotronics Corp., which will supply and sell the fireworks.

The council approved funds for the July 4 fireworks display organized by the Culver City Exchange Club. The club said said its expenses had risen this year, primarily because of insurance increases. Council member Richard Brundo, a club member who helped organize the event, said the show’s liability insurance premiums are more than $3,000 higher than last year.

Brundo said the club will spend $8,000 to $10,000 of its own funds on the show and will realize a profit of $3,000 to $4,000, mainly from concession stands and advertisements by local businesses in the show’s program book. The profits will go to scholarships and local charities, he said.

Pyrotronics, the low bidder among three fireworks companies, will supply the fireworks for the show.
