Times Grants-in-Aid Go to 200 Students

The Los Angeles Times Fund has awarded $100,000 in educational grants-in-aid to 200 graduating high school seniors throughout Southern California, enabling them to continue their education next fall.

The $500 awards were presented recently to the seniors at ceremonies conducted at public and private schools in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.

The grants-in-aid program, started by the Times Fund in 1967, has awarded more than 5,600 grants totaling more than $2.1 million since its inception. The grants may be used at trade and technical schools, colleges or universities.

“Students who receive these grants have demonstrated a personal commitment and desire to further their education, as well as a determination to succeed,” said Tom Johnson, publisher and chief executive officer of The Times and president of the Times Fund.

“In awarding these educational grants-in-aid, the Times Fund gives needy students the means and encouragement to pursue their educational goals and makes their drive for advancement become reality.”

The program is supported by the proceeds of various Times-sponsored events. Two upcoming events are the 41st annual Times/Rams Charity Game on Aug. 23 and the Volvo Los Angeles professional tennis tournament featuring Ivan Lendl at the Los Angeles Tennis Center from Sept.15 to 21.

The following students are grant recipients in the Los Angeles area this year:
