--The Angels’ Wally Joyner and the Oakland A’s Jose Canseco remain on a pace that threatens the major league rookie records for home runs and runs batted in. Wally Berger of the 1930 Boston Braves set the home run record with 38, and Frank Robinson of the 1956 Cincinnati Reds equaled it. Ted Williams of the 1939 Boston Red Sox set the RBI record with 145. Canseco has 16 homers and 57 RBIs through 62 games, projecting to record totals of 42 homers and 149 RBIs. Joyner has 19 homers and 49 RBIs through 61 games, projecting to a record 50 homers and 130 RBIs.

--Dickie Thon, put on the Houston Astros’ disabled list, is batting .205, having gone hitless in his last 17 at-bats and 4 for 42 since May 16, when he was hitting .267. Beaned severely in 1984, Thon said he was having trouble seeing the ball. The Astros reportedly believe he falls back on that explanation whenever he slumps.

--Allen Anderson, recalled in midweek, is the 15th pitcher to appear on the Minnesota Twins’ roster this season. The Twins have won only two games in which they have scored four runs or less. Supposed relief ace Ron Davis saved two of the first four games of the season but hasn’t saved any since and is the subject of reported in-fighting between Manager Ray Miller, who wants to release him, and President Howard Fox, who doesn’t.

--Charlie Hough’s streak of 35 straight games with a decision ended when he merely pitched 13 innings of the Texas Rangers’ 6-2, 16-inning win over Minnesota Wednesday night. On three days’ rest, Hough threw 170 pitches, 168 of them knuckleballs.
