Deukmejian and Rose Bird

Share

I am prompted to write by your article (June 6), “Governor Accuses Rose Bird of Ignoring Public’s Will.”

I would like to ask our esteemed governor at what point in time did he decide the office of Chief Justice of the California Supreme Court became a public forum?

I have always been under the assumption that our judicial system functioned independently from the whims of political expediency and pressure. Gov. George Deukmejian’s claim that Rose Elizabeth Bird ignores the public’s will has no foundation. Chief Justice Bird was appointed not to follow or bend to anyone’s will, but to uphold the Constitution of the State of California, and protect all of the people’s rights under the Constitution.

No Chief Justice Bird, you are not a branch swaying in the winds of party politics. You are the protector of all our rights under the Constitution and you are doing a fine job.
