Shawon Dunston had never faced Steve Carlton but he learned quickly, and Jamie Moyer was thrilled his first pitching victory came “against a future Hall of Famer.”

Dunston knocked Carlton out of the game with a two-run double that capped a four-run third and Moyer made his major league debut a success Monday as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-5.

Carlton struck out Dunston in the second inning “on a slider” so when he came up in the third inning with the bases loaded he was ready.

“I was looking for a slider and got it,” said Dunston, who doubled on the first pitch. “I was ready with the bases loaded and I just wanted to make contact.”

Moyer had a hand in the big inning. With two outs and a man on second, Carlton walked Steve Lake intentionally to get to Moyer.

Moyer ran the count to 3 and 2 and drew a walk to fill the bases. Davey Lopes also walked to force in a run before Dunston doubled.

Moyer said he wasn’t taking all the way and “when they walked Lake intentionally, I really wanted to hit.”

“The walk to Moyer was the key, that was the ball game,” Philadelphia Manager John Felske said. “You can’t walk him in that situation.”

Leon Durham’s two-run homer in the fifth gave Moyer a bigger cushion.

Felske also complained about the Phillies’ base running in which two runners were thrown at home and another at third.

Keith Morland led off the Cubs’ fifth with a single, and one out later, Durham hit his homer into right-field stands.

The Cubs made in 7-2 in the sixth when Lopes walked, stole second, and scored on Ryne Sandberg’s single.

The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Von Hayes walked, stole second went to third on a single by Glenn Wilson and scored as Steve Jeltz hit into a force play.

Juan Samuel singled in a run in the fifth and singles by Rick Schu, Samuel and Mike Schmidt in the seventh led to three runs, knocking Moyer out.

Moyer gave up eight hits, walked three, struck out two and hit two batters over 6 innings. Jay Baller pitched one inning before giving way to Smith.

Ron Roenicke doubled to open the game for the Phillies, but was thrown at third when Schu grounded to Dunston at short.
