San Juan Capistrano : Caustic Acid Spill Shuts Down On-Ramp
A shattered bottle containing caustic acid was found on the Ortega Highway on-ramp to the northbound Interstate 5 Tuesday morning, forcing fire officials to close the ramp for about an hour.
Capt. Joe Kerr, a spokesman for the county Fire Department, said the bottle possibly fell from the back of a truck.
The San Juan Capistrano on-ramp was closed until about 8:30 a.m. A chemical company was summoned to remove the shattered bottle and acid.
The acid, used to clean pools, can burn skin, irritate lungs if inhaled and contaminate water, Kerr said.
