Man Seeks Complaint, but He Winds Up in Jail

Allan Kruis came to the Corona police station to file a complaint against his ex-wife Tuesday afternoon, but he ended up in jail instead.

Local authorities had been looking for the 30-year-old Norco man since Monday night, when he allegedly fired a shotgun at his former wife in her Corona home, Police Sgt. Tim Slane said.

Kruis was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and held on $10,000 bail at the Corona City Jail.

The couple were divorced in January, and Kruis was awarded custody of their two grade-school-age children, Slane said.

Kruis went to his ex-wife’s house Monday night to pick up the children and tried to take some of his daughter’s things as well, Slane said.

When the girl’s mother objected, Kruis “pulled out a shotgun and fired off a round . . . narrowly missing her,” Slane said. Kruis then left in his car with the two children, and his ex-wife called police.

On Tuesday, Kruis called the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department to complain that his former wife had violated a custody order by picking up one of the children at school, Slane said. He was referred to the Corona police, who were surprised to see him.

Lt. Roy VanderKallen came to the front counter to take the complaint, Slane said. “When the guy told him who he was, . . . of course (VanderKallen) knew it was him.”

One of the children was in the mother’s custody Tuesday night, and police were attempting to locate the other child, who was believed to be staying with one of Kruis’ friends, Slane said.
