Dan Maloney resigned as coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs after failing to gain a long-term contract from owner Harold Ballard.
Maloney, who coached the Leafs for two seasons, had sought a multiyear contract but was offered a one-year deal by Ballard.
In another NHL coaching move, Terry Simpson, a successful coach in the junior ranks for 15 years, was named coach of the New York Islanders. He succeeded Al Arbour, who retired May 28 after 13 seasons and moved into the front office.
