Jet America to Join Airlines at Burbank With 2 Daily Flights

Share

Jet America Airlines will begin serving Burbank Airport on July 16 with two flights in and out of the airport daily, airport officials said Thursday.

One plane will come from Dallas, then depart Burbank for Milwaukee. The other flight will come from Milwaukee, then depart for St. Louis. In each flight to and from Burbank, there will be a stop in Las Vegas.

The airline is the fourth to be admitted to the airport since November. Trans World Airlines, United Airlines and Royal Air West also have been admitted to the facility since then.

The approval was given without a formal vote by the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, which oversees the airport. Federal Aviation Administration rules require that an airline be admitted to the airport if its flights do not increase the noise impact area of the airport and if the airline uses Stage 3 aircraft, the quietest available.

Although the admission of Trans World Airlines and United Airlines sparked anger from homeowner groups that have been battling to alleviate noise and halt growth at the airport, reaction to the latest move was relatively subdued.

Commissioner Mary Lou Howard said, however, that she objects to the requirement that the commission admit airlines if they meet the two criteria. “We all have got to be concerned with the increased number of flights,” Howard said.

Jet America previously announced that it will begin service at Washington National Airport on July 16 and start flying out of Ontario Airport on that date. The expansion into the four cities is being made possible by the acquisition of two new MD-80 aircraft from Douglas Aircraft Co., the airline said.
