U.S. Faces Yugoslavia in Water Polo Series

Share

Water polo teams from Yugoslavia and the United States, which finished 1-2 in the 1984 Olympics, will play two exhibition games in the Southland this weekend and another next Wednesday.

Games are scheduled Saturday night at 7 at Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, Sunday night at 7:30 at the Belmont Plaza pool in Long Beach and Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Olympic Swim Stadium on the USC campus.

In the first game of the series, Wednesday night at San Diego, the teams tied, 8-8. That was their second meeting of the year. Yugoslavia beat the United States, 8-7, in a tournament in France earlier this month, scoring the winning goal with three seconds to play.

The teams tied in the Olympic final, 5-5, but Yugoslavia won the gold medal on goal differential for the tournament. Although the teams playing here are not identical with the ones that played in the Olympics, many of the players are the same.
