Intelsat approved a new backup service.

The new service is intended to restore traffic to be carried on new high-capacity, transoceanic fiber-optic systems expected to go into service in 1988. The restoration service is being introduced now in order to permit cable owners to plan effectively, Intelsat officials said. Intelsat--The International Telecommunications Satellite Organization--is an international cooperative of 110 member nations. Its global commercial communications satellite system is used by countries around the world for international communications and by 26 countries for domestic communications.
