National League Roundup : Herr Drives In Both Runs; Cardinals Win in 11th, 2-1

Tom Herr, who went 5 for 5, singled home the winning run with the bases loaded in the 11th inning Monday night at St. Louis as the Cardinals rapped out 15 hits in a 2-1 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Herr, who had a double and four singles, drove in both of the Cardinals’ runs as St. Louis won its fourth straight game, matching its season high.

Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, and the Cardinals tied it in the fifth.

Terry Pendleton opened the Cardinals 11th with a single off Pat Clements (0-3), the fourth Pirate pitcher. After Andy Van Slyke popped out, Vince Coleman and Ozzie Smith walked, loading the bases, and bringing up Herr, who bounced a single to left on a 1-1 pitch.

Todd Worrell (5-7), the third St. Louis pitcher, got the win. He entered the game with runners at first and third in the top of the 11th inning and got Sid Bream to ground into a double play.

Houston 7, Cincinnati 6--At Houston, Glenn Davis hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Astros snapped a four-game losing streak.

Davis’ home run, his 15th, came after Phil Garner led off the inning with a single off Ted Power. Larry Andersen (1-0) got the victory in relief.

Run-scoring singles in the ninth by Buddy Bell and Tony Perez had given the Reds a 6-5 lead.

After leading, 2-0, the Astros scored three to go ahead, 5-2, in the fifth. Bill Doran drew a leadoff walk and stole second. After a walk to Garner, Doran took third on a wild pitch and scored on Eric Davis’ single. Kevin Bass then doubled in Garner and Davis.

Montreal 5, New York 4--In a game matching high school teammates, Dwight Gooden and Floyd Youmans, Andres Galarraga’s RBI single drove home Herm Winningham with the winning run in the 10th inning at New York.

Winningham led off the 10th with a single to right off Jesse Orosco (3-4). Winningham was sacrificed to second by George Wright and went to third on a flyball by Mike Fitzgerald. Galarraga then delivered his first game-winning RBI of the season to lift Montreal to its third straight victory over the Mets.

Tim Burke (5-2), the third Montreal pitcher, went two innings for the victory.
