A jury has found that former UCLA star Tim Wrightman didn’t violate his contract with the Arizona Wranglers when he injured himself during a 1984 pickup basketball game and thus should be paid that year’s salary of $115,000.

The Maricopa County Superior Court verdict was reached in a suit against George Allen, the United States Football League team’s former coach, and former owners Ted Diethrich and Willard V. Harris.

The defendants had argued that Wrightman, who now plays for the Chicago Bears of the NFL, was engaged in a recreational sport when he injured his right knee and thus violated the exclusivity clause in his contract that limits the activities of players.

Wrightman argued that basketball was an accepted part of a conditioning program for some of the team’s players. Five other Wranglers were involved in the game, testimony showed.
