Santa Monica : Society Seeks to Save Saloon
The Santa Monica Historical Society has launched a drive to save the Rapp Saloon, a city landmark and the first city hall in Santa Monica.
The society has collected more than 700 signatures on a petition requesting that the City Council support the society’s efforts to preserve the building at 1438 2nd St., according to spokeswoman Louise Gabriel.
Gabriel said the society wants the city to move the building and restore it on city-owned land. Suggested locations include a parking lot across from the saloon or next to City Hall on Main Street.
Gabriel said the Rapp Saloon, the first brick building in Santa Monica, was constructed in 1875. It has been used as a kindergarten, Salvation Army headquarters and a movie studio.
The Historical Society’s petition also requests that it be designated permanent caretaker and custodian of the building. The society can be contacted by calling (213) 394-2605 or writing to Box 3059, Will Rogers Station, Santa Monica 90405.
