A kidnaper was sentenced to life in prison for his role in the bungled abduction of the 26-year-old daughter of a wealthy merchant. Hsieh-Cheng (Peter) Yu, 38, was sentenced by Pasadena Superior Court Judge Sally Disco after trying unsuccessfully to take back his earlier guilty plea. Yu’s attorney, Fred Browne, said his client plans to appeal because he was not aware of the implications of a guilty plea. Yu and two other Taiwanese citizens living in California, Hsiang Tien Huang and Chiang-Ching Liu, were recruited by the Ba Ling Gang and Four Seas Gang of Taiwan to kidnap Way Chin Chang of Monterey Park on Oct. 24, 1984, and hold her for $1-million ransom, according to an FBI report. But, the records showed, the plan went awry when Chang’s father, Ming-Yu Chang, a Taiwanese jewelry and currency merchant, refused to pay the ransom.
