Buses traveling Interstate 5 will be in for careful scrutiny today and Sunday.

California Highway Patrol officer will inspect tour and charter buses at the CHP’s truck inspection station adjacent to the immigration checkpoint south of San Clemente as part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s “National Bus Check Week,” said Ken Hearst, a CHP supervisor.

About 25 CHP personnel have been assigned to the checkpoint for the operation from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday. The safety team expects to check more than 100 buses, with each check taking approximately 20 to 30 minutes, he said.

If safety violations are discovered, bus drivers can either make repairs on the spot or call for a replacement vehicle. When the infractions are small--such as operating with no log book--drivers will be cited and then allowed to continue, Hearst said.

Of the 98 buses inspected during a similar crackdown in 1983, nine were immediately taken out of service, three were repaired for minor safety infractions, and drivers for 37 others were issued citations for minor mechanical problems, Hearst said. One bus driver was found to have an expired drivers license.

The CHP expects similar results this time, Hearst added.
