Unseasonably Warm Weather to Linger : Get Out the Lemonade, Hot Fourth Is Expected

It is nothing like the record-breaking high temperatures of a year ago, but unseasonably warm weather is causing discomfort for San Diegans.

Monday marked the one-year anniversary of the Normal Heights fire, a day when the temperature reached 96 degrees at Lindbergh Field. While Monday’s high of 81 was considerably lower than last year’s record, it was still warmer than the 72-degree average for this time of year.

Weakening tropical storm Celia, now about 550 miles off northern Baja California, is the reason for the hot and muggy weather. Breakers generated by Celia are averaging 3 to 5 feet, with occasional 6-footers.

“The hurricane has now dissipated,” said forecaster Wilbur Shigehara of the National Weather Service. “There will be a decrease in the humidity, which reached 64% Monday, but temperatures should remain above seasonable throughout the week and for the Fourth of July weekend.”

He said inland highs should remain in the 85- to 95-degree range, while beach temperatures will be 77 to 83.
