A third scientist from the Scripps Institute of Oceanography at UC San Diego will join a Natural Resources Defense Council team Thursday on a trip to install nuclear test site monitoring devices in the Soviet Union, the council announced.

Paul Bodin, research associate at Scripps, will take part in the scientific exchange in which U.S. scientists will work with members of the Soviet Academy of Sciences near test sites in Nevada and in the Kazakh Uplands of the Soviet Union. He will join two other scientists named by the National Resources Defense Council last month.

The joint venture was arranged and funded through the council, a private, nonprofit environmental protection organization. “The opportunity to undertake a joint scientific venture with our Soviet colleagues is very thrilling,” Bodin said, adding that his role will be “to baby these cranky instruments for a couple of months.”
