Lendl Taken to Limit but Wins

Top-seeded Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia who had not dropped a set through the first four rounds at Wimbledon, was extended fully by American Tim Mayotte today before beating him 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 3-6, 9-7 to advance to the men’s semifinals.

In Friday’s semifinal, Lendl will play unseeded Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia, who defeated India’s Ramesh Krishnan 6-2, 7-6, 4-6, 6-3. The other semifinal will pit Frenchman Henri Leconte, the seventh seed, against defending champion Boris Becker of West Germany. Leconte beat Australia’s Pat Cash 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, 6-3, ending the comeback of the unseeded Australian, while fourth-seeded Becker had the easiest time of the winners, defeating Czechoslovakia’s Miloslav Mecir 6-4, 6-2, 7-6.
