Dr. John R. Beljan has been named vice president for academic affairs at California State University, Long Beach, university President Stephen Horn announced.

Beljan is a 1951 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in chemistry and zoology. In 1954 he was awarded a doctor of medicine degree by the university. After service in the Air Force and private industry, Beljan helped develop the curriculum of the new medical school at University of California, Davis.

He was also the founding dean of the Wright State University medical school in Dayton, Ohio, and dean of Hahnemann University medical school in Philadelphia.
