The “Los Angelization” of parts of Santa Barbara County could occur in the next four years if growth is not checked, and the county already has water and traffic problems due to lack of controls, the Santa Barbara County Grand Jury said in a report. Jurors called on the county Board of Supervisors to take a leadership role in curbing “unplanned urban sprawl.” The report projected that the population of Santa Barbara County would grow to 341,000 by 1990. In 1980, the population was 299,000. “The county seems to be ill-prepared to accommodate the planning needed,” the report said.
