Taxes, Charity and the Downtown YMCA

Share

If the private clubs win, they could destroy a valuable institution: the YMCA. The Y is dedicated to serving the needy children and adults in each community that the YMCA serves.

Its health facilities are important because the profits from them support the charitable services that are needed in the community. The local businessmen become more acquainted with the needs of the community by their association with the YMCA and often support YMCA fund-raising drives. The facilities are also used to help the underprivileged in the community.

The YMCA health clubs not only are partly used for charitable purposes, but also their profits are used to support desperately needed charitable activities.

Should the YMCA be taxed, this money would not go to its charitable services but to our local government. Then our local government would have to provide the money for the same services that are now provided free of charge by the YMCA.

This could mean that more money would be needed to provide the same services. I say let us keep the YMCA the way they are.
