Niven wrote two volumes of delightful, anecdotal autobiography and an autobiographically flavored novel. But Morley, son of actor Robert and previously the biographer of Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence, found much Niven left unsaid: an unhappy childhood with a frosty stepfather, a slow-starting career, the tragic death of a beloved first wife. Morley reads as he wrote, with sympathetic, unexploitative candor.
