The number of California gull chicks at Mono Lake in the eastern Sierra has increased for the third consecutive year, according to Eldon E. Horst, research coordinator for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, who said there are 25,869 this year. That figure, he said is up about 6,000 from last year’s census and almost five times as many as the 5,542 that were tallied in 1984, but still not up to the 1980 figure of 28,200.
