The firm said it hopes to reduce its worldwide work force to 30,000 by the end of August to operate more efficiently “in today’s fiercely competitive but still sluggish computer market.” Wang plans to reach its goal of 1,600 fewer jobs through attrition, voluntary early retirement, a “voluntary separation program” in which certain employees who elect to leave the company get extra pay and other benefits, and layoffs of about 220 people at Wang’s factory in Juncos, Puerto Rico. The programs will have little impact in California.
