MEXICO CITY EXHIBITORS ASK PRICE BOOST
Operators of movie theaters in the capital are asking the government to lift ceiling prices for tickets, currently set at 300 pesos or about 45 cents.
The request follows the removal of price controls on tickets for legitimate theaters.
“In case it is not possible to liberate prices, all means will be investigated to adjust reality to the value of a ticket at the entrance to a theater,” Ignacio Rodriguez, president of the National Chamber of the Cinematographic Industry, told local reporters.
“By continuing artificial (low) prices, we exhibitors cannot meet the demands of our workers, who, with good reason, are seeking a higher salary. Neither can we eliminate resales. And construction of theaters is discouraged,, which promotes the bottleneck that exhibition of Mexican cinema is suffering,” he said.
Ticket scalpers have become a frequent sight outside movie theaters here, with some allegations that they are working with the exhibitors to ensure higher prices for admission.
