Race Across AMerica : Penseyres Stretches Lead in Bike Race
Peter Penseyres of Fallbrook remained the leading cyclist in the fifth day of the Race Across AMerica on Thursday.
Penseyres took over the lead of the 3,120-mile race on the third day when he passed Mike Secrest of Flint, Mich., and has stretched the gap between them to 112 miles. He entered Garner, Ark., on Thursday night.
At his current pace of 407 miles a day, Penseyres has a chance at breaking the race record of 9 days, 2 hours and 16 minutes set by Jonathan Boyer of Berkeley.
The riders started in Huntington Beach on Sunday and the race ends on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City.
Lon Haldman of Harvard, Ill., is in third place and Matt Beerer of Garden Grove is in fourth, close to 160 miles behind the leader.
Elaine Mariolle of Berkeley is the women’s leader and is fifth overall. She also is on a pace that would break the women’s record of 10 days, 14 hours and 25 minutes set by Susan Notorangelo of Harvard.
