WEEKEND TV : PANELISTS WILL PONDER PORN, TAXES

Topics on TV’s public affairs series range from pornography to taxes this weekend.

The controversial report of the U.S. Attorney General’s Commission on Pornography, which called this week for a major crackdown on pornography, will be discussed on both national and local programs.

The report justified its call for tougher laws against pornography on the grounds that there is a link between sexually violent materials and “anti-social acts of sexual violence.” Critics assailed it as a call for censorship that violates the First Amendment.

Commission Chairman Henry Hudson will be one of the guests on “Meet the Press” Sunday (9:30 a.m. on Channels 36 and 39, 10:30 a.m. on Channel 4). Joining him will be the Rev. Donald Wildmon, executive director of the National Federation for Decency; Christie Hefner, president of Playboy Enterprises, and Barry Lynn, legislative counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union.

Locally, KCBS-TV’s “Newsmakers” will debate the commission’s findings at 10 a.m. Sunday (Channel 2). The guests will be Gayle Binion, executive director, Southern California chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union, and Ray Gauer, a legal staff member of Citizens for Decency Through Law.

“This Week With David Brinkley” tackles questions pertaining to the nation’s economy and tax structure at 11:30 a.m. Sunday (Channels 7, 3, 10 and 42) with Treasury Secretary James Baker III, Sen. Phil Gramm (R-Tex.) and Rep. Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.).
