Thrifty Sales, Profits Climb for Quarter and Nine Months

Thrifty Corp., a Los Angeles-based drug and discount chain, reported an increase in sales and profits for the third quarter and first nine months of fiscal 1986.

Net income for the quarter ended May 31 was $6 million, up 6.6% from the same period last year. Sales for the period were $364 million, an increase of 6.5%.

For the nine months, the company reported net income of $25 million, up 6.5% from the previous year’s period. Sales were $1.1 billion, a 5.8% rise. Fiscal 1985 sales included revenue from food service units that were closed near the end of fiscal 1985.

Thrifty agreed on May 28 to be bought by Pacific Lighting, parent of Southern California Gas. Shareholders of both companies are to vote on the merger at special meetings scheduled for Aug. 5.
