A19-year-old North Hollywood man died early Saturday after being shot outside a Pacoima convenience store Friday night in an apparent gang-related shooting, Los Angeles police said.

Joe Tony Venegas was shot once in the upper body at about 11 p.m. at the Arco AM-PM Mini Market at 13150 Osborne St., apparently by rival gang members, Detective Cliff Ruff said.

Venegas was taken by friends to Serra Memorial Health Center, where he died about 12:30 a.m., police said. The friends, who apparently witnessed the killing, did not remain at the hospital. They are being sought by police for help in tracking Venegas’ killer, Ruff said.

Other witnesses inside the store told police they heard the gunfire and saw Venegas fall but did not see who fired the shot, Ruff said.

Venegas was stabbed in the leg May 29 at the same convenience store but refused to cooperate with police investigating the assault, Ruff said.

Police are trying to determine a motive in the killing, Ruff said.

Ruff said Venegas was listed in Los Angeles Police Department files as a gang member.
