A week of naturalization ceremonies ended with the last of 9,600 new Americans from 61 countries--led by Vietnam, Mexico, the Philippines, Korea and China--taking the oath of citizenship. Immigration officials said the number of new citizens in the Los Angeles area will reach a record 100,000 this year. “I guess people have finally realized the only way they can bring in their family members and get employment was to get citizenship,” said Daniel Hesse, a deputy assistant director of the Immigration and Naturalization Service.
