‘Math Wars’--U.S., Soviets Tie for First in High School Tests
The United States and Soviet Union tied for first place in this year’s international high school mathematics competition, the U.S. team director said today.
The United States and Soviet Union each received 203 points, said Cecil Rousseau, a mathematics professor at Memphis State University in Tennessee. West Germany was third with 196 points, followed by China with 177, East Germany with 172 and Romania with 171.
In the individual competition, the six-member U.S. team won three gold medals and three silver medals. The Soviets won two golds and three silvers, Rousseau said.
The annual International Mathematics Olympiad this year included 192 students from 37 countries.
Among the U.S. gold medal winners was David Grabiner, 18, of Claremont, Calif.
The contestants answered six questions during the two-day competition and an international jury graded the results. Students who scored a 34 or better received gold medals.
