Oil Can Boyd Returns to Red Sox, Offers an Apology for Walking Out

After missing three games and threatening to quit the team, Boston Red Sox pitcher Dennis (Oil Can) Boyd returned to Fenway Park Sunday where he issued an apology to teammates and was re-instated to the team, pending the end of his three-day suspension.

Boyd, who walked out on the Red Sox Thursday after learning he had not been named to the American League All-Star team, was suspended by the Red Sox through Sunday, or until he apologized to the team. Boyd reportedly must also agree to undergo some sort of psychiatric examination.

Sunday, Boyd met with Red Sox Manager John McNamara, General Manager Lou Gorman and team physician Dr. Arthur Pappas for 40 minutes before holding a 10-minute closed door meeting with his teammates.

After the meeting, Boyd left the park. His suspension ends Monday.

According to the Red Sox, Boyd will rejoin the club Wednesday after the All-Star break, when it begins a 13-game West Coast trip. Boyd (11-6) is tentatively scheduled to make his next start Friday in Seattle.
