Police Trace Suspect in Motorcyclist’s Death
A San Fernando man was arrested Monday on suspicion of felony vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run driving in connection with the death last week of a 22-year-old motorcyclist, police said.
Marcos Mereida Vargas, 28, was arrested at 4 p.m. at his home and is being held in lieu of $6,000 bail in San Fernando Jail, San Fernando Police Sgt. Michael Harvey said.
Police believe Vargas was the driver of an automobile that ran over David Lara, 22, of Pacoima in San Fernando Friday. Witnesses told police that Lara was westbound on San Fernando Road at San Fernando Mission Boulevard about 5:40 p.m. when he fell while trying to avoid a car making a turn in front of him and slid under the vehicle, Harvey said.
Lara was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, Mission Hills, where he died at 1:18 a.m. Saturday, police said.
Investigators traced Vargas through the license plate of the car, which they said he had borrowed from a friend.
