U.S. Basketball Team Advances, 69-60

Center David Robinson scored 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds Tuesday night as the United States beat Yugoslavia, 69-60, to reach the final four of the World Basketball Championships.

The United States joins the defending champion Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and Brazil in the gold-medal competition, which begins Thursday in Madrid.

The Americans were assured of a berth in the championship round after Italy beat the other contender, Argentina, 78-70, earlier Tuesday night.

The United States finished atop its six-team semifinal division in Oviedo with a 7-1 record. In the opening game of the medal round, the Americans will play Brazil (7-1), which lost to the Soviet Union, 110-101, Tuesday night. In the other game, Yugoslavia (7-1) will play the Soviet Union, at 8-0 the only team to go undefeated through the first two rounds of the tournament. The winners will meet for the gold medal on Sunday.
