WASHINGTON — The Senate Judiciary Committee today postponed confirmation hearings for President Reagan’s two nominees to the Supreme Court following tough negotiations with Democrats and civil rights groups.
“Everybody feels that the time for preparation has been inadequate,” a Democratic source said.
The Judiciary Committee, which must approve Reagan’s nominees and send them to the full Senate for confirmation, agreed to postpone hearings slated to begin next Tuesday for William H. Rehnquist to be chief justice and the July 29 hearing for Antonin Scalia to be associate justice.
The new dates for Rehnquist’s hearing will be July 29 and July 30 and for Scalia Aug. 5 and Aug. 6.
