Local News in Brief : Juvenile Detention Camp to Stay as Such

Share

A Utah company confirmed Friday that it has dropped its efforts to convert Artesian Oaks, a juvenile detention camp near Saugus, into a privately run adult prison.

Rex Barber, director of the services group for Management and Training Corp., said the company has been unable to find a new 200-bed juvenile detention facility--a condition imposed by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for converting Artesian Oaks, in Bouquet Canyon, into a prison.

“We feel it is futile to pursue it any further,” Barber said.

The company’s efforts to transfer juveniles to where the defunct Lake View Terrace Hospital used to operate ran into community opposition, as did its proposal to house adults at the Artesian Oaks camp.

Barber said the company is now looking at alternative sites near Riverside and San Diego for the prison.
