To Rap Fenway Park Is Going Too Far
Although transplanted New Englanders endure with inbred grace the multitude of calumnies directed at our teams in the sports pages of The Times--from snide remarks about Larry Bird’s grammar to invidious questions about the training-table habits of the Patriots--we draw the line at the following from Mike (Poison Pen) Penner in describing Fenway Park as: “a home run launching pad that masquerades as a baseball stadium.”
First of all, Fenway is not a stadium, it is a park . Not only is it a park, but it is the most perfect park for the playing of baseball ever fashioned by the hand of man (or God).
Secondly, in the very issue of The Times wherein the preceding blasphemy occurred, there appeared a list of the actual home run launching pads in the big leagues. And, although Fenway Park was not listed amongst them, the senior citizen center at Anaheim that masquerades as a baseball stadium was.
Wise up, Penner!
