Soviet Clinics to Use Acupuncture to Treat Alcoholism

MOSCOW — The Soviet Health Ministry has ordered all alcoholism treatment centers to buy needles after successful experiments by Moscow doctors in treating alcoholics by acupuncture, the labor union daily Trud said Friday.
The ancient Oriental technique is one of the more exotic methods being used in Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev’s campaign against drinking.
Until now he has been relying on higher vodka prices and shorter store hours to try to break Russians of their hard-drinking habits.
