The supreme commander of Soviet armed forces in East Germany, appointed less than a year ago, is leaving his post, the official news agency ADN reported Saturday.

The agency said Gen. Pyotr Lushev, who commanded 400,000 troops, is going to a new post, which it did not name. However, it appeares likely that Lushev has been promoted; he was recently awarded East Germany’s highest military decoration, the Scharhhorst Order.
