New York Times correspondent John F. Burns, jailed in Peking on suspicion of espionage, was visited by his wife and U.S. and British officials, the first Westerners to see him since his detention early Friday. U.S. Embassy spokesman Lynn Noah said the reporter is “well and in good spirits.” Two senior Times editors are still waiting for approval to visit Burns. Chinese authorities have said that Burns, 41, is being held for “carrying out intelligence activities” during an unauthorized motorcycle trip into a restricted area of central China earlier this month.
