Santa Ana : Telephone Switch Gets a Lot of Wrong Numbers

Share

A switch to a new telephone system at City Hall resulted in chaos Monday morning when people calling old numbers were either switched to the wrong number or got a recording saying the line had “been disconnected and there is no new number.”

Councilman John Acosta said he tried calling City Hall at 8:10 a.m. and received a referral. When he tried calling that number, it turned out to be the Fire Department. “We can’t have this,” he said. “This is horrible.”

Dave Borik, a budget research officer who is helping to oversee the switchover, said the problem was that Pacific Telephone wasn’t correctly referring all callers to the city’s information line as promised. He said the problem would probably be corrected by Tuesday.

By changing to an in-house system, the city hopes to save as much as $20,000 per year on a seven-year agreement, Borik said.
