The San Diego City Council on Monday voted to buy 8.24 acres of canyonland in the crowded Mid-City area and preserve the property as permanent open space.

The land is in Lexington Canyon, northeast of Interstate 805, a short distance north of its junction with Interstate 15.

More than a year ago, some Lexington Canyon property owners attempted to join together and sell their land for residential development, according to the city manager’s office, but were unable to do so.

In September, the City Council was told that key land parcels in the canyon were for sale. A month later, it approved funds to have the properties appraised.

As a result of Monday’s unanimous council decision, the city will now attempt to buy the 32 Lexington Canyon lots for $525,000.
