Nakasone Wins Parliament Vote, Shuffles Cabinet
Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone won reelection as Japan’s chief executive today in a parliamentary vote and swiftly reshuffled his 21-member Cabinet, changing all positions but one.
Nakasone, who scored an unprecedented landslide in July 6 nationwide elections for his ruling Liberal Democratic Party, was reelected to serve out his present term ending in October in a special session of the Diet, or Parliament.
A short time later, Nakasone replaced 20 members of his Cabinet.
A key change was in the Foreign Ministry, with Shintaro Abe, 62, leaving his foreign minister’s post to become chairman of the Executive Council, the highest policy-making organ of the party.
The new foreign minister, Tadashi Kuranari, is a relatively unknown LDP figure who is expected to be guided by Nakasone on foreign policy matters.
