Share

GM Hughes Electronics Corp.--the General Motors subsidiary that includes El Segundo-based Hughes Aircraft--earned $154 million in the second quarter, up 67.4% from last year’s $92 million on a pro forma basis, the company said. Revenue totaled $2.8 billion, compared to $2.4 billion last year.

This brought six-month earnings to $291 million on sales of $5.3 billion, compared to pro forma profits of $218 million on sales of $4.7 billion a year ago.

GM Hughes doesn’t provide results for Hughes Aircraft, which was acquired last December for $2.7 billion in cash and 50 million shares of GM Class H common stock. But the company said revenue rose at the subsidiary’s two major divisions--Hughes Aircraft and Delco Electronics.

GM said it will release the parent company’s results today but chose to announce the earnings of GM Hughes, Electronic Data Systems, the computer services subsidiary that it acquired in late 1984 for $2.5 billion, and General Motors Acceptance Corp., its financing arm, in an effort to highlight their profitability within the giant auto maker. (Automotive products accounted for 96% of GM’s $96.4 billion in 1985 sales and 94% of its $4 billion in profits.)

Dallas-based EDS posted earnings of $62.7 million, up 47.5% from last year’s $42.5 million. GMAC earned $298.6 million, up 25% from 1985’s $238.9 million.
