Hurricane Estelle weakened as it churned in the Pacific, but it remained a threat to Hawaii, the National Weather Service said. Rough surf pounded the southern shores of the island of Hawaii, and residents prepared for the worst. The weather service said that, based on its present westward course, the hurricane, which earlier packed 145 m.p.h. gusts, could leave Hawaii almost unscathed, hitting the islands with no worse than gale-force winds. It was centered southeast of Honolulu.
